Have you ever felt as though someone is pulling your strings, making you do things you would rather not or stopping you from doing things you would prefer to continue?

Most of us don’t like the feeling to be manipulated.
Being manipulated can be a highly stressful experience, it is unpleasant, demeaning, and disturbing.

But it happens so often.

Manipulation is used because it works so well.
If it wouldn’t work, it would stop!

When you allow a manipulator to exploit and control you, he will continue to manipulate you.
As long as it works for him, there is no reason for him to stop it.

However, if you make the manipulation ineffective by changing your reaction, your attitude, your behavior, the manipulator will be forced to change tactics or to seek an easier target elsewhere.

Publilius Syrus meant:
“Look to be treated by others as you have treated others.”
Eventhough there is no guarantee the chance is higher that you get a desired response.
It seems to be in fashion to insist on respect towards oneself.
Shouldn’t it start with our behavior towards the others?

Sometimes we want something so desperately, that we ignore even the most obvious arguments against it.
In such a case wishful thinking is often misinterpreted as intuition.

Gaius Julius Caesar:
Men willingly believe what they wish.

This is true, but is it the best strategy for important decisions?

Speech Preparation

In the words of Mark Twain:
“That speech is most worth listening to which has been carefully prepared in private and tried on a plaster cast, or an empty chair, or any other appreciative object that will keep quiet, until the speaker has got his matter and his delivery limbered up so that they will seem impromptu to an audience.”

It is possible, but extremely rare that a good speech is truly given off the cuff without some advance thoughts.
Nevertheless; the goal of an excellent speaker is to let the speech appear as it came off the cuff.

Few are able to master that.
As the result those are seen as more authentic and competent.

What is more important; trust or cautiousness
How about the combination of trust and cautiousness in the sense off responsibility?
What are the consequences on your decision making and self marketing?

I always prefer to believe the best of everybody – it saves so much trouble.

Rudyard Kipling

In my believe system it is helpful to combine this point of view with another one.
I add another proverb:

Believe in God but tie your camel well.

Having both sentences in mind will have positive effects on the own decision making and self marketing.

Recognition

Recognition is the greatest motivator.

Gerard C. Eakedale

When this is true; how thoughtful and grateful are we in regards to recognition?
Do we offer recognition when we appreciate something?
And on what basis do we offer recognition?

Thoughtful recognition is such a good way to enforce positive behavior and wanted changes.

What do you think about repetition?

Albert Einstein meant:

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result.

It is a common experience that we can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.
It is also true that doing the same thing over and over can lead to mastership when learning takes place.

New Year’s Day:  Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions.  Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual.

Mark Twain

Unfortunately many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits.

Just in case you really want to change a habit; do it within 36 hours.
Otherwise the chances decrease with every minute you wait.
To establish a new behavior it needs repetition.
So the brain establishes the necessary neurological pathways.

Please allow me to remind you:
Remember that the only one who really can stop you is you.

I wish you health, happiness and success in 2012.
And may you find your way to enjoy a fullfilling life.

Karsten Noack

Whether you want to do Jazz or giving a speech; your attitude is the key to success.

You can play a shoestring if you’re sincere.

John Coltrane
